Middleton High School Theater Presents Shakespeare with a Twist

Ending the school year with a bang, the advanced theater students at Middleton High School will tackle one of Shakespeare’s most popular tragedies Romeo and Juliet with a twist. In their final performance of the year students will present “The Suessification of Romeo and Juliet,” a one act comedy by Peter Bloedel. The play is a whimsical reinvention of Romeo and Juliet featuring the wordplay of Dr. Seuss – performed using rhymed couplets, creative wordplay, vividly-colored sets, costumes, and makeup. Playwright Bloedel created a mash-up of a little-known Dr. Seuss book called “The Sneetches” with Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” when writing this play.

In the Seuss story, Sneetches are bird-like creatures – but are divided into groups. The “cool” crowd has stars on their tummies; the outcasts have no such marking. Because this story portrays the meaninglessness of prejudice and discrimination, the parallels to Shakespeare’s story are obvious.
