I hope everyone had a great, long Labor Day weekend. I was able to see my son in Twin Falls and spend lots of money to get him ready for his final year at CSI. I also traveled to Baker City, Oregon and spent some time with my brother and his family. Although I did lots of traveling, I feel refreshed and ready to tackle this week of adventure at Heights!
Staff:
Welcome our newest 5th grade teacher--Jessica McLenna. Jessica is coming to our school highly recommended by Mill Creek (where she did her student teaching) and from Boise State University. After interview, the 5th grade team knows Jessica will be a great addition to our staff. She has wonderful creativity, wants to integrate technology as much as possible, and Jessica is trilingual, which will be a great benefit to our school. She will be working in the current 5th grade classrooms this week and will be ready to lower those class sizes with her own room next week. Please help welcome her!
Update--Our school counselor, Alyssa Rogers, continues to recover from her car accident last week. She did attempt to come back last week, but just wasn't 100% yet. She is going to a concussion clinic and hopefully, will be able to join us again next week.
PBIS:
The PBIS team has been working hard to get PBIS up and running strong where we left off last year. You have received Hawks Tickets. Your goal is to give at least 5 tickets out per day. These can be given to any student, any grade, any where you see kids demonstrating great character (especially responsibility for this month's theme). Our goal is to have 2000 tickets turned in by the end of this month. (Tumbler will be on table by the office--give to office until there).
Gold Club Cards: We will be accepting applications for Gold Club Card Members this month. The applications are (or will be) on the table by the office. If you believe a student consistently demonstrates great character, encourage them to apply. First group of applications are due September 20th (the week prior to our assembly).
Teach-To Focus: The teach-to focus this week is Hallway Behavior. Please teach and reinforce the hallway behaviors as outlined on your matrix. Ms. Waters will be doing fidelity checks and students should be able to name at least 3 expectations we have at our school. Next week's focus is Bathroom Behavior.
Fire Drill:
The fire drill went very well. We had all students out and accounted for in under 3:00. Please make sure your doors are closed and that hallway doors are not blocked open. Also, make sure to have your clipboards and green/red signal cards. We need to see those while you are in your lines.
Due:
Substitute folder, classroom management plans, and three focus items for collaboration are due
Collaboration:
Data from our screeners has all been input and distributed to grade levels. Collaboration Wednesday: Meet in grade levels and set focus groups. I will be meeting with kindergarten and Cindy will be meeting with first grade. Turn in collaboration notes by Friday. Focus groups will begin next week.
New Schedule:
With the addition of a new 5th grade, our schedule will be changing a little bit. 5th grade, specialists, some EAs, SpEd, Title, and kindergarten will see a change. Music is being relocated to the cafetorium. Please be cognizant that a class is in the cafeteria on T, Th, F. Try not to send kids through during class time. 3rd grade may also need to look at snack schedule.
Pay for Performance:
The leadership team helped shape a pay for performance plan based on our school's goals/needs (Hispanic/Latino and Economically Disadvantaged subgroups in the areas of language and math). The team asked some great questions and worked hard to develop a plan which meets our needs and represents all those who help shape our students. We will be using Plato SBAC pac to do a pre and post test in the areas of language and math. We set the goal to increase our proficiency by 10% in those subgroups. We said that anyone who is employed at Heights Elementary will receive pay for performance, based on their FTE at our school (all certified and classified) if our goals are met.
Indoor Recess:
We encourage our students to be out in all weather types. If it is too rainy or cold, or the air quality does not permit recess, please review your recess plan with your team and students. We've been fortunate to have kids outside; however, we know there will be days.
Duties:
Be on time to your duties. If you are absent, make sure your substitute knows your duty. This is evaluative. Student safety is a priority!
