Proposed Calendar Changes

Negotiations finished Thursday, June 9, 2012, MEA met on Friday to ratify the agreement.  On Friday morning, June 10th the calendar committee met to hash out the proposed calendar for 2011-2012.  The School Board has the calendar on their agenda for the June 27th meeting.  In the mean time District administrators are using the information from the negotiated contract, the calendar committee and the wishes of the Board to determine schedules for all.  What I will spell out here is a DRAFT waiting for Board approval.

Points considered in the development:
  • Teachers took furlough days resulting in 172 day contract (counting 5 paid holidays)
  • Classified personnel will use Jobs Bill funding to hold to last year's 176 days (no paid holidays)
  • Secretaries maintain at 209 days
  • Administrators take an additional 3% cut, 207 days
  • The Board does not want student contact time reduced
Major adjustments to calendar:
  • Classified return August 9 (with Friday the 12th & 19th off)
  • Teachers return August 22, August23 (10-6pm) District meeting & Open House
  • Students first day August 24
  • All teacher work and professional development days have been eliminated
  • Conferences have been added for fall only, Oct 27th  3:45-7, Oct 28th  8-12:30 (no afternoon)
  • Semester ends before Christmas break.  Teachers return Jan 9
  • Last day of school for students and teachers Wednesday, May 16
  • Last day for classified Friday, May 18
  • Class schedule 8:10-2:52 M, T, Th, F and 8:10-2:00 on Wednesdays
Some of my initial thoughts:
  • We have to cut minutes off of recess.  I'm thinking 13min in PM rather than 15 with a 4 minute space between groups to allow for better in/out transition.
  • We will do morning duty, keeping kids out till the 8:05 bell leaving them five minutes to get to class before the tardy bell at 8:10.
  • Last day of school we will NOT send home report cards.  We will post to Skyward the next day or parents can pick up the following week if no Family Access.
  • School will end before the ISAT testing window.  We will need to limit end of year events, keeping to bare minimum.  Any field trips and such should be scheduled earlier in the year.  We will need to carefully consider Extravaganza and Fitness Picnics. 
  • Classified work two extra days and we can schedule inventory for those days without student responsibility interruptions.

    Why does the classified staff go back to work 2 weeks before the certified when the classified are only to work 4 more days then the teachers?

    Certified day count includes five paid holidays. Classified staff does not have paid holidays and therefore their day count is actual days served. Certified is based on contract while classified is an hourly wage.

    Why does school start at 8:15 on Wednesday? Couldn' t we use the extra 5 minutes then and not have to adjust recess?

    I'm not sure where you saw that school starts at 8:15 on Wednesdays. Tell me where so that I can change. It is a misprint. Every day will start at 8:10, including Wednesdays.

    District website link for Daily Schedule has the 8:15 start time.
