Friday, December 3 we are going to pilot a Character Assembly. If feed back is positive we will implement monthly. I would like you to bring students to the gym immediately after the bell so we can start no later than 8:25. We will use students to help us introduce the new character trait before celebrating student achievements - character card achievers and Gold Club members will be announced. Others could be recognized at this time also. Second grade will help us usher in the December trait of kindness and will introduce the food drive for this year. This should be short and sweet. Hopefully any missed specials can be rescheduled later in the day.
Lisa has drafted the 2010 phone tree but we think texting is a much more efficient manner for communicating school closures. After all, isn't that what we hope for with the phone tree? I have created a staff group in my phone of all the staff cell phone numbers that I have been given. I can create one text message and send to the group simultaneously. If you have a cell phone and will accept a text, give me your number and I can add you to the quick list. Non-texters will be put on the same "branch" of the phone tree to call through as in the past. Check your number on the phone tree in your box. Make any necessary changes or initial by your name and return to Lisa. We will then recreate the list and utilizing for major communication items.
Our lock down drill revealed some areas in which we can improve. The first concerns is that some rooms did not hear the announcement of the drill; they had no idea what was going on. Staff members should move away from doors and windows with students. Your doors should be locked and closed to prevent entry by unknown persons to begin with. We are still working on getting more outdoor keys and a coded touch pad for the entry to the lunchroom from the gym. You don't have to use a second exit from your room, but you need to have thought about how you would get students out if you couldn't use your door. What would you use to break a window? How would you get kids up and out? Cathy Roberts has created the room numbers for your windows. These should be visible from the outside of the building. Please post in the upper east corner of your window strip.
The Gold Club membership will be as special as we make it. Please use these students as often as possible, driving home the theme that "membership has its privileges." Some ideas are substitute go-to kids, tour new students, step up for jobs when others are absent, free bathroom pass, etc. Toni is using them to help track the new Mighty Miler program. We will get a picture taken and posted soon.
Project Zero sign ups are Monday. This "contest" is to help us focus on healthy choices throughout the holidays in an effort to not gain weight. Rules are simple; weigh in Monday and deposit $5. Then don't gain weight. Weigh in one last time when we return from Christmas break. Gain weight = loose your $5 investment. Maintain or lose weight = share the pot with other 'winners'.
Still no word on dates for the annual safety inspection. I have Darcy to do a room to room check for daisy-chaining. Bruce has identified a book shelf that needed to be secured to the wall. Please make sure that items are not stored on top of your coat closets or on top shelves of storage closets. We should have a new inspector, so let's knock their socks of with our attention to safety issues. Report any areas of need to me as soon as possible.
