Update from the State Department of Education

JFAC TO SET PUBLIC SCHOOLS BUDGET NEXT WEEK
The Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee (JFAC) is scheduled to set the Public Schools Budget for fiscal year 2011 on Monday, March 1.
JFAC voted last week to hold schools harmless from mid-year cuts by backfilling $86.6 million into the public schools budget with state rainy day funds and fiscal stabilization funds from the federal stimulus package. While this vote will prevent mid-year cuts in the current school year, it will make cuts even deeper in FY2011.
You can watch the JFAC meeting live online at http://www.idahoptv.com/leglive/.

MTI summer schedule posted March 1 – The summer schedule for the Mathematical Thinking for Instruction course (MTI) will be posted on March 1, 2010. Online registration will begin at 8 a.m. MST on March 15, 2010 on the same web site.

State adopts new middle school Praxis II tests –
In addition to the already existing Middle School: Mathematics Praxis II test 0069, the state has adopted several middle school Praxis II tests to assist in easing the burden of your middle school core content teachers in becoming highly qualified. Here are the three tests: Middle School: English Language Arts 0049; Middle School: Science 0439; and Middle School: Social Studies 0089. Also, to give your teachers an opportunity to prepare prior to the first available testing period in March 2010, here is the link to the new tests and the test at a glance material: http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menuitem.1488512ecfd5b8849a77b13bc3921509/?vgnextoid=1f046da2a41f3210VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD&vgnextchannel=c5036da2a41f3210VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD.
